It may seem strange to you but until recently I never thought much about who my spiritual leaders were. My grandmother never gave much in the way of advise. I don’t remember her ever raising her voice to me. Yet at a whisper I would cringe if I thought she was displeased with me. I don’t know how she did it but her love compelled me to the point that her influence is still empowering others in my coaching practice. So why didn’t this occur to me until now?
After reading a few of these lists including The Time’s list of the most influential people it dawned on me that this is a subjective excercise that I can also participate in.
Sally Mae Scurlock
Pastor Luanna Stines
Sister Hedi Wilson
Virgie Frietas
My little girl
Michelle Obama
You may only have heard one of these names, but each one has impacted my life significantly, and the list is growing rapidly. When I think about potential it is not often historical icons that come to mind, but each of those who have and still do influence my life today. Whether it is a book signing in another state where I don’t know anybody, or a networking event in my own backyard, having to apologize for a mistake I’ve made or facilitating a powerful parent mastermind I hear their voices telling me that I really am this powerful!
Now that my little girl is watching my example I am much more focused on giving her a role model worth looking up too. We make mistakes and experience miracles, then we share these experiences together. And as we talk through them she is learning to also express both trials and triumps with equal enthusiasm. Investing in the kinds of role models that propel me gives her a greater view of mountain top. I have learned that my professional and my parenting decisions often overlap. This lesser known secret makes me even more effective in both arena. What about you?
